Symposium Details
"If I were there I would be saying that the word "symposium" comes from the Greek word "symposion" which, in turn, derives from the Greek verb 'sympeninein' which means to drink together. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines symposium as "a convivial party with music and conversation" or "a social gathering at which there is free interchange of ideas." While the music may be in short supply, I trust that all of you – and especially those of you for whom this is your first time at a meeting like this – find this symposium both intellectually stimulating and socially rewarding."
- Robert Mittelstaedt
Each spring, the Department of Marketing at Nebraska hosts the Mittelstaedt & Gentry Doctoral Symposium. Modeled after the Haring Symposium held annually at Indiana University, participant schools send representatives (presenter, discussant and faculty member) to Lincoln for a two-day Symposium emphasizing dissertation research.
Participant schools include Indiana University, The Ohio State University, Michigan State University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota, University of Maryland, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, University of Iowa, West Virginia University, Iowa State University, University of Kansas, University of Missouri, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Oregon, University of Utah, University of Arizona, University of Wyoming and Washington State University.
The Symposiums start with a welcome reception on Thursday evening. All-day Friday and Saturday morning, presentations of dissertation research are made by doctoral students, followed by comments from doctoral discussants and then by discussion from the audience as a whole. Friday evening there is a banquet, and the Symposium ends with lunch on Saturday. Participant schools are asked to pay for transportation to and from Lincoln and lodging at the Courtyard by Marriott. The Department of Marketing covers the cost of the meals and the Symposium proceedings. There is no registration fee.
