Galina Brukman Named Best and Brightest Online MBA by Poets&Quants
May 2021 graduate Galina Brukman of Cliffside, New Jersey, was named among the Online MBA Best and Brightest Class of 2021 by Poets&Quants. The online media outlet focused on business schools asked the graduate about her online MBA experience.
"I chose UNL because it has such a great reputation for being one of the best online MBA programs and the program lived up to my expectations: the faculty is amazing and class structure provides a lot of opportunity to work as part of the team, which is quite impressive given that all of the classes are remote! Another big reason is the 100% asynchronous course content, which allows students to log in and listen to lectures and participate in discussions at their own time. That makes it easy to take classes regardless of the time zone, and makes it possible to keep with the pace of a full time career at the same time," she said.
MBA Bolsters Pham's Leadership in Military
MBA@Nebraska student Thu Pham emerged as an early contributor to the U.S. Space Force when it became the sixth branch of the military in December 2019. Pham, a captain in the U.S. Air Force, worked and trained others on missile warning Space-Based Infrared Systems while completing her online MBA.
“The military always pushes you to be a better leader,” said Pham, who minored in merchandising as a chemistry major but wanted to grow as a manager. “An organizational behavior class I took in the MBA@Nebraska program helped me process how to understand and communicate better with people I’m leading. It showed me how to fix an organizational culture from the bottom up. It starts with little things like understanding the strengths of your team and how each can be utilized.”

Master’s Degree Leads to Super Bowl Ring
Although Candice Dominguez, ’19, competed in track and earned her master’s degree, her need to help others always superseded her desire to be in the limelight. Even so, she found herself on stage earning a Super Bowl ring with the Kansas City Chiefs while fulfilling her aspirations in player engagement.
“I worked as a Husker graduate assistant in equipment, but I wasn’t passionate about it,” said Dominguez, who high jumped at Nebraska.
While considering her options for her future, she decided to reach out to a Chiefs’ representative. “I asked for an interview and he told me to call. By the end of our first conversation, he wanted to see my résumé.”

Family Connections Run Deep for Ross
Hailing from Mullica Hill, New Jersey, Tyrell Ross, ’10 and ’18, ventured halfway across the country to attend college due to family connections. Today, after earning accounting and MBA degrees, the former track star continues to make his mark at Nebraska Business.
“My mom, (Rebecca, ’84, actuarial science) grew up in Albion, Nebraska, and my dad, (Edward) ran track from 1982 to 1984,” said Ross. “My proudest moment was running my best time of 13.68 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles. That beat my dad’s best time of 13.83, which was the school record for 12 years.”
After graduation, Ross worked for the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. In 2014, he became assistant financial manager at the College of Business. Later, he was promoted to director of finance and budget.

Chase Helps With State Testing for COVID-19
A drive to serve led Nebraska’s Gabe Chase, '20, to the front lines of the global pandemic. The MBA@Nebraska alum was one of a number of students in the Nebraska National Guard’s 155th Air Refueling Wing who were called to assist with COVID-19 testing statewide. Chase’s section within the 155th's medical group served primarily in central and western Nebraska, operating drive-through testing stations in Grand Island and Lexington.
“I’m more of a people person, so I like to work registration,” Chase said. “It gives me a chance to talk directly to people and, if needed, calm them down about the testing. It’s a task I feel I’m gifted at doing.”

Leading MBA Education for Nearly 60 Years
Nebraska’s MBA program has continued to evolve and innovate for nearly 60 years. First established in 1964, the college established the program to meet a growing demand for managerial personnel under the leadership of Dean Charles S. Miller with funding from the Cooper Foundation. In the early 1990s, the program converted to a 48-credit-hour evening program to meet the needs of students with degrees other than business. Beginning in 1992, the program utilized CorpNet satellite technology to primarily fill the gap in high-level business training in western Nebraska. The satellite program marked a shift in the program’s focus on the working professional.
Nebraska's partnership with Offutt Air Force Base started in the 1960s under the direction of Professor Henry Albers. Master’s and Ph.D. courses were offered under a contract with the Department of Defense. Two significant developments led to the current look of our online MBA program. Following the first Gulf War, the tour of duty at Offutt for most military personnel was reduced to two years. To allow students to complete their degree in two years, the Offutt program compressed the courses into four 10-week terms per year. This allowed students to take two courses per term and achieve the necessary 48 credit hours for program completion. Following the events of 9/11, to allow students to remain enrolled while serving on overseas assignments, the courses were moved online. In 2002, the online MBA transitioned to allow both military and non-military students. Program enrollments increased from approximately 40 students to 600 currently enrolled students.
Nebraska was one of the first schools to offer its MBA online. With roots in serving the military and veterans, the program’s leadership continues to meet the needs of those who need flexibility in the program’s design and course structure. The online MBA program was later rebranded as the MBA@Nebraska and has continued to excel in career outcomes and reputation.
