Business students graduating this summer can participate in Go Big Grad: A Husker Graduation Celebration, happening online Aug. 15. The virtual program begins streaming at 9 a.m. at https://commencement.unl.edu and can also be seen on a live broadcast by NET.
Dr. Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the College of Business, hopes graduates stay engaged with the college as they begin their new careers. She praised the class for persevering through difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our graduates' ability to finish their college careers strong during these most unusual circumstances prepares them for great success,” said Farrell. “Although we wish they could experience a traditional Commencement ceremony now, we urge alumni to stay connected with the college and always help challenge us to be the best we can be.”
The online celebration features a presentation from Dr. Marilyn Moore, retired associate superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools and past president of Bryan College of Health Sciences. Moore, who received three degrees from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, including her doctoral in educational administration in 1980, gives her address “The Air Between Us …,” along with an appearance from Chancellor Ronnie Green to officially confer degrees.
Graduates receive a complimentary mortarboard delivered before the event. The celebration concludes with an invitation for graduates to turn their tassels together as a class.
Business graduates wishing to share their graduation experience with classmates, family and friends can download a celebration kit on the college website. It offers printable banners, Zoom backgrounds, fun Husker-themed recipes, a video message from Farrell and other fun activities. Graduates can use the hashtag #GoBigGrad on social media posts to share experiences throughout the day.
“Nebraska takes great pride in offering our students a welcoming, personal educational experience, and our commencement ceremonies are an extension of that,” said Dr. Vanessa Gorman, professor of history and chair of the university’s Commencement committee. “We have one of the highest rates of attendance nationally, around 83 percent. While it’s a disappointment to all of us that we can’t share this celebration in person, we want to provide students the closest thing to it.”
In total, 128 doctoral, master’s and bachelor students receive their degrees this weekend. The university plans to mail diplomas after Aug. 15. Graduates can also download and share digital diplomas via https://go.unl.edu/digitaldiploma.
