Common Advising Questions
What is my Degree Audit?
Your Degree Audit is a layout of the classes you need in order to complete your degree. The report shows the courses you have taken as well as the requirements you still need to complete. You can access the document from your MyRED account.
What does a 'W' on my transcript mean?
A "W" means that you withdrew from a course after the withdrawal period. It does not state why you withdrew (grade, interest, changed major, etc). It is NOT replaceable. A "W" will not affect your GPA, but it could impact graduate school applications or finding a job after graduate. You should meet with an academic advisor before withdrawing from a class to discuss consequences in more detail.
How do I drop a class?
Talk to an ADVISOR! You drop courses through MyRED but it is in your best interest to talk to an advisor beforehand to make sure it is okay to drop. IF YOU DROP A COURSE THAT IS REQUIRED FOR YOUR DEGREE, YOU WILL HAVE TO RETAKE IT. When thinking about dropping a course, it is important to consider how the drop will affect your total credit hours, financial aid eligibility, full-time status, GPA, and timeline for graduation.
How do I change a course to/from Pass/No Pass?
Talk to an advisor! You will change your course status through MyRED, but it is in your best interest to talk to an advisor beforehand to make sure it will count for your degree.
General Requirements
What courses qualify for ACE courses?
There are 10 ACE areas that must be met as part of your studies at the College of Business. Some ACE courses must be met with a specific class, even though there might be more ACE courses in that area. Students only need one course per ACE outcome, but any additional ACE courses could be completed for the elective requirement.
The ACE requirements are:
- ACE 1: Written Communication
- ACE 2: Oral Communication Skills
- ACE 3: Mathematics
- ACE 4: Study of Scientific Methods and Knowledge of the Natural and Physical World
- ACE 5: Study of Humanities
- ACE 6: Study of Human Behavior
- ACE 7: Study of the Arts to Understand Their Context and Significance
- ACE 8: Study of Ethics
- ACE 9: Global Awareness or Knowledge of Human Diversity
- ACE 10: Capstone
You can find a list of qualifying ACE courses using the "Find A Course" feature of the online Undergraduate Bulletin or by using the ACE Advising Tool.
What are ACE courses?
Achievement Centered Education (ACE) courses are outcome based courses designed to enhance the undergraduate experience by providing broad exposure to multiple disciplines, complementing the major, and helping students develop important reasoning, inquiry, and civic capacities.
Can I use one ACE course to satisfy two requirements?
Yes, depending on the course. ACE courses can be double counted with 300/400 level electives. Some ACE 9 courses can also be used to satisfy the International Business Course Requirement (IBCR). See the online Undergraduate Bulletin or visit with an advisor for full details.
What constitutes an elective course?
An elective course can be any course that does not already fulfill a degree requirement in the College of Business. These courses can also be used to pursue a second major or minor in or out of the College.
Do I need to take an International Business course?
Yes, unless you are majoring in Accounting. Accounting majors are the only business students not required to take an International Business course (IBCR). Students who plan carefully can double count their International Business course (IBCR) in their Business Core-Major, Business Elective, second major, minor, or possibly ACE 9. A list of courses that satisfy the IBCR requirement can be found in your Degree Audit.
Is there a recommended sequence for my coursework?
Yes. The College of Business has developed Four Year Plans for each of our majors. The plans can be found in the Undergraduate Bulletin and on the Business Advising and Student Engagement homepage.
Honors and Scholarships
How do I know if I am on the Dean's List?
Students must complete 12 graded classroom hours for that semester (P/N hours do not apply) and carry a minimum of 3.6 GPA. Students who receive a 4.0 GPA that semester will be recognized by an asterisk behind their name. Dean's List recipients are published on the College of Business Dean's List webpage.
I made the Dean's List, but my name did not appear on the website or in the newspaper.
If you selected to restrict your information to outside sources, no information about you can be disclosed. This includes honors you receive while attending Nebraska.
Will I graduate with Distinction?
To be eligible for distinction a student must complete 45 graded credit hours (excluding P/N) at Nebraska prior to the semester they graduate and must have completed 60 graded credit hours (excluding P/N) at the time they graduate. This honor is limited to approximately the top 10% of the graduating class, with no specific grade point average assigned. In general, Highest Distinction is assigned to students with a 3.9 GPA, High Distinction goes to students with a 3.8 GPA or above, and Distinction is assigned to students with a 3.7 GPA or above. Distinction is determined based on the cumulative GPA prior to the semester of graduation. Students who are awarded the honor of distinction are notified in the final semester of their studies.
How do I apply for scholarships?
College of Business scholarships are available for current students and are awarded based on scholarship and donor specifications, including student financial need, academic performance, major, and class standing, among other factors. To be considered for financial need criteria, students need to have completed a current FAFSA.
- Visit our Current Student Scholarships webpage for more information.
College of Business Contacts
How can I contact my professor?
The first place you should look for your professor’s contact information is your course syllabus or the Contact Info link in your Blackboard course. As a second option, you can use the Nebraska Directory.
Enrichment Opportunities
Should I seek an internship?
Although internships rarely provide academic credit within the College, students are strongly encouraged to seek internships. These valuable opportunities can provide a student with experience in their future career choice and enhance their likelihood for employment.
How do I find an internship?
Visit with Business Career Center to learn more about internship opportunities. The Nebraska Career Services website also offers great resources for internship searches.
How do I get credit for my internship?
Business students can receive credit for an internship in two ways:
- Departmental 399: this option is an Independent Study course through the College of Business where students work with a College of Business faculty member to earn credit for their internship.
- EDPS 496: this option is a Directed Field Experience offered through Career Services in the Union 230.
Students should make an appointment to meet with an advisor regarding internship credit to see which option works best for fulfilling degree requirements.
How do I find a job?
Business students are encouraged to work with the Business Career Center regarding job preparation and postings. Avenues for finding a job include:
- Career Fairs
- Employer in Residence visits
- Handshake
- Internship opportunities
Why should I consider studying abroad?
Statistically only 3% of the students nation wide participate in a study abroad experience. Employers like to see that a student is willing to go outside their comfort zone and gain different perspectives. Studying Abroad is a wonderful experience, in addition to being a great marketing tool to set you apart from other prospective candidates.
Degree Audit
I have completed a course at another institution that is not showing as fulfilling a specific requirement on my Degree Audit. Why not?
The Degree Audit system has the ability to recognize courses from schools with whom we have direct equivalencies.
How do I read my Degree Audit?
If you take a little time to look over the Degree Audit, you will see that it is very easy to read. The front section gives an overview of the entire document and follows with more detailed information for each of the sections. Degree Audit matches the sections of your Undergraduate Bulletin that talk about academic requirements and utilizing both tools together may be helpful. You might also check the Degree Audit web page which provides helpful information.
I took a class that is not showing up on my Degree Audit. Why not?
There are potentially several reasons for this:
- Near the end of the semester, before final grades have been posted, Degree Audit moves grades to a "NR" No Reporting format. It moves these courses and hours to the end of the Degree Audit until final grades are received.
- If you failed the class or did not receive the minimum grade necessary for it to count toward the degree, the course will show up in the section marked hours not applicable toward the degree and also at the end of the Degree Audit noting that they are not counting due to the grade received.
- Degree requirements must be taken for a grade. If you took something on a p/n basis, it will show up in electives only, and/or as not applicable toward fulfilling degree requirements.
Why are hours for my second major showing up in electives?
Your Degree Audit will show a section for the second major, but given that these hours are additional hours, these hours can be used to fulfill appropriate electives.
Where does my minor show up on Degree Audit?
You need to formally declare your interest in a minor by filing a change of major form in CoB 125. Once done, the minor designation will appear near the end of your Degree Audit. You will also see that the courses used for the minor also appear in the appropriate elective section(s).
What does Excess Electives mean?
Excess electives generally indicate that you have taken more than 120 hours. The courses may be needed to meet requirements, especially if you have a minor or second major. They may also be courses that you took that did not meet any requirements. You need to check through Degree Audit to see if they appear under another requirement or see an advisor.
Procedures

Changing majors/minor within the College of Business: To change your major and/or minor, call 472-2310 or check MyPlan to set up an appointment to meet with an academic advisor in the Undergraduate Advising Office (CoB 125). The advisor will help you change your major and/or minor within the College.
Changing majors to the College of Business from another Nebraska College: To declare a major in the College of Business from another college, students are required to have a 2.5 GPA and complete a Transfer In Session. The Transfer In Session is online and can be completed when it works well for your schedule.
To start the change of major process, students will need to visit their current Nebraska advisor to obtain a signed College Degree Major Advisor (CDMA) Change Form. This form needs to be brought to the CoB 125 office for processing. While in the office it is required that you meet with a College of Business academic advisor to go over requirements and course sequencing for your new major.
Changing majors from the College of Business to another college: The reception staff in the Business Advising and Student Engagement Office can assist you in completing the top portion of the College Degree Major Advisor Change (CDMA) Form. You do not need to book an appointment to fill out the paperwork, just stop by during normal office hours (8am-5pm, M-F). You will then need to take the form to your new College.
How do I go about adding a minor?
To add a minor, you should call 472-2310, to schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor. They will assist you in preparing the necessary paperwork. A list of available minors that can be declared by business students can be found in the Undergraduate Bulletin.
Should I consider a minor?

At the same time, minor(s) could help you to stand out from other job candidates, making you more marketable. Minors usually entail 12-18 credit hours, depending on the minor. With careful schedule planning you can obtain a minor through your elective hours and not pay for additional credit hours.
Policies
What is the difference between a co-requisite and a prerequisite?
A co-requisite refers to a recitation, quiz and/or laboratory class that is taken in conjunction with the course lecture. You must enroll concurrently for your registration in a course that requires a co-requisite to be accepted.
What is the difference between course prerequisite and College prerequisite?
A course prerequisite refers to a specific course that must be completed prior to enrolling in a course. Course prerequisites provide a foundation for the student to master the material in the course that requires it. College prerequisites refer to courses that all business students must complete prior to advancing into their Business Core classes (Foundation, Intermediate, Major, and Capstone). These include the 2.5 cumulative GPA requirement, among others.
How many hours do I need before I am considered Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing?
- Freshman = 0-26 credit hours
- Sophomore = 27-53 credit hours
- Junior = 53-88 credit hours
- Senior = 89+ credit hours
Note: Class standing configurations for Priority Registration are based on completed credit hours and do not include in-progress credits.
Grades
Can I take a course Pass/No Pass?
Pass/no pass stipulations are listed in a student’s Degree Audit. ALL courses for the Non-Business requirements (ACE courses), Business core requirements (Foundation, Intermediate, Major, Capstone, and International Business Course requirement), and 300/400 Upper-level Requirements must be taken for a grade. Business students are allowed to take a maximum of 6-9 credit hours P/N, depending on their bulletin year. We recommend you talk to an advisor in CoB 125 prior to taking a course P/N to make sure the course will fulfill a graduation requirement.
Do I have to retake a course that I receive a grade of "C-"?
No, not unless the course specifically states that a C or better is required. For example: MATH 101 and ACCT 201 require a "C" or better in order for a student to advance on to the next level, MATH 104 or ACCT 202.
Can I receive a "D" in a course and have it apply toward my degree?
Yes, if the course does not specifically state that you must receive a C or better, or is required for you to advance to the next level. However, we do not recommend this. You are expected to maintain a 2.5 GPA to be business qualified, which allows you to enroll in upper-level business courses. A 2.5 GPA is also required to apply for graduation.
Do I have to have a 2.5 GPA to remain in the College of Business?
The College of Business expects its students to maintain a 2.5 GPA to register for most business courses. However, should your GPA fall below a 2.5 you can remain in the College of Business. Academic advisors will work with you to raise your GPA.
How can I raise my GPA to a 2.5?
The most effective and least expensive approach to raising a GPA is to retake courses you have received a C- or below in. The new grade received in the course completely replaces the old grade. Fact: It takes 3 new courses, where A's are received, to undo the damage that retaking one course will do.
Can the College of Business help me with my academic concerns?
Yes. All College of Business advisors are able to work with students concerned about their GPA. You can book an appointment to meet with an advisor in the MyPlan tab of your Blackboard account.
Transfer Questions
Can I take courses at another institution?
Yes. A student can bring in 60 credit hours from a 2-year institution and 90 from a 4-year institution. However, there are various rules concerning transfer courses and the way they count toward your degree. It is highly recommended that you meet with an academic advisor before taking transfer courses.
How do I know if I can transfer a course from another institution?
Students can check the Nebraska Course Equivalency List to determine how a course will transfer back to Nebraska. If you are unable to find a particular transfer course from another institution, visit with a College of Business academic advisor about the possibility of getting the course pre-evaluated.
How do I get my courses from another institution transferred to Nebraska?
To transfer course credit from another institution you will need to have your transcript sent to Nebraska Admissions. If the course is a direct equivalent it will automatically be placed on your Degree Audit. If the course is not a direct equivalent, you may need to get it validated through the corresponding academic department.
Can I retake a course at another institution and have it replace a Nebraska course grade?
To replace a grade in a course you took at Nebraska you must retake it within the NU system, consisting of these institutions: Nebraska, Omaha, Kearney, or Nebraska's Extended Education program.
Grades do not transfer from any other institutions, so it is not possible to complete a grade repeat outside of the University of Nebraska system.
Graduation
How will I know if I will be graduating on time?
Check you Degree Audit online through your MyRED account. All Areas should be marked with an "OK" or "IP". We encourage you to see and advisor in CoB 125 if there are any areas marked "NO" or you have any questions.
If you plan on graduating at the end of the semester, the top of Degree Audit should say "All degree requirements are complete --- In progress courses included". This will indicated that your Degree Audit is complete and you are on track to graduate at the end of the semester. If Degree Audit says "At least one requirement has not been satisfied", then you will need to see an advisor as soon as possible to identify the problem.
Will the courses I need to graduate be available?
Not all courses are available every semester. Plan AHEAD in scheduling the last three semesters of course work to ensure a timely graduation.
