Undergraduate Internships
Internships provide students with exposure to industry-based engineering work while applying classroom knowledge, developing professional skills, and exploring career paths. Unlike co-ops, internships could be part-time or full-time, and may be available in the fall, spring, or summer terms.
Students are able to have their internship included on their academic transcript by enrolling in our zero-credit internship course during the semester their internship occurs. Retroactive credit for an internship experience is not available.
Frequently Asked Internship Questions
What qualifies as an internship?
Internships must meet certain standards and expectations. The University of Nebraska and ENGR 395 adhere to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) definition of “internship.”
What are the basic requirements for an internship?
To qualify for ENGR 395, positions must meet the following criteria:
- be related to a students' major
- provide the opportunity for students to perform engineering work
- involve at least 150 hours of work
- be under the supervision of an engineer
I'm an international student. Can I participate in internships?
Yes, international students with an F-1 visa may participate in internships, and employers do not need to sponsor international students hired through these programs. Instead, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain CPT authorization through the University's ISSO office by completing paperwork with Engineering Career Services and completing a CPT application. International students working beyond 364 days of full-time employer will lose Optional Practical Training benefits.
International students are not able to begin employment until their CPT authorization is in hand. It is crucial to allow sufficient time to complete this process, and we are unable to rush applications.
Note: CPT is not meant to be a means for ongoing employment, but rather a way for international students to gain valuable training related to their degree. Because of this, international students are limited in the number of times that they may take CPT.
