The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering has seen increases in both undergraduate and graduate student enrollment in recent years. Undergraduate enrollment during the Fall 2024 semester was up 11.3% over the previous year, and graduate student enrollment in CEE programs was up 11.5% over the previous year.

These increases were driven by a 22.4% increase in the size of the freshmen class, and a 21.9% increase in female students in the department. Additionally, the number of students from historically underrepresented ethnic minority groups in the department increased by 15.9% over the Fall 2023 semester.

These increases in students from underrepresented demographic groups build on prior years of steady increases. In the past five years, the number of women in CEE’s graduate programs has increased 52%, and the number of women in CEE’s undergraduate programs has increased 85%. The number of students from historically underrepresented ethnic minority groups in CEE undergraduate programs has increased 31%.

In addition to increases in enrollment, CEE has made progress on one-year retention rates. The department’s one-year in-major retention rate for the Fall 2023 cohort was 67.8%, compared to 62.8% for the Fall 2022 cohort and 58.9% for the Fall 2021 cohort.
