Building Information Modeling (BIM)

The advent of the Building Information Model (BIM) paradigm brought a significant breakthrough in processes in the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Application of 3D object-oriented modeling techniques allowed the creation accurate 3D building product models containing rich project lifecycle information. BIM has become the central platform for various processes, such as cost estimating, construction planning, simulation & monitoring of building energy consumption, real-time object tracking, and indoor air quality monitoring.

Research Areas of Interest

BIM for construction safety planning and monitoring: The goal of this study is to enhance construction safety by leveraging BIM and real-time sensing technologies to automate the process of worker safety planning and monitoring.

Robot task planning and execution: This study intends to extend the boundary of BIM to construction robot task planning and execution. Beyond simple visualization of robot objects, Kyungki Kim is creating BIM-based tools for construction robotization that support the generation of elemental motions (e.g., grasping, moving, turning, picking) of robots considering contextual information presented in BIM.
