The 2024 course was held at: University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE from June 10th until June 14th
The summer redox graduate course, Redox Regulation, Oxidative Stress and Selenoproteins,is a joint training experience encompassing an international exchange with students and lecturers from the Karolinska Institutet (KI), the Redox Biology Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the Medical University of South Carolina. The course is held annually each summer, alternating between the Karolinska Institutet, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the Medical University of South Carolina.
Examples of subjects discussed:
Glutathione S-transferases in Redox Regulation and Glutathione Dependent Catalysis
Nitric Oxide Signaling and Cellular Redox State
Calcium Signaling, Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis
Glutaredoxin and Thioredoxin Systems
Structural Basis of Redox Active Enzymes
Redox Activities of Antioxidants in a Cellular Context
Metals, Metabolism and Oxidative Stress in Human Disease
Selenoproteins
Mitochondria, Reactive Oxygen Species and Human Disease
The course is built upon a framework of discussions between graduate students in redox biology with leading experts in the field, combined with lectures, training in oral presentation, career counseling sessions and a written exam on redox biology. Teaching will be structured with morning lectures in basic concepts as well as cutting-edge research findings in the field. Afternoon sessions will include student presentations followed by discussions between lecturers and students.
Course Credit (Pass/Fail Only):
Evaluation of the degree of participation in student-lecturer discussions
Evaluation of the student's own project presentation
Written examination
Attendance during compulsory parts of the course as well as the grade of "Pass" in all three parts of the course must be fulfilled for a final grade of "Pass".
Course Prerequisites:
No particular prior knowledge is required, but students will be expected to be graduate students (registered PhD candidates) active within the field of redox biology.
Course Admission:
UNL and UNMC students are admitted according to the following priority groups:
Registered PhD students in the field of redox biology within RBC laboratories
Registered PhD students in other research fields.
Within each group, admittance will be done according to the date of application to the course (earlier applications have priority). Assessment of the student will be performed by the course co-organizers based upon a short project description by the student, which should be submitted together with the application to the course. The number of students accepted will be limited.
Enrollment Process:
UNL students must register for this course in MyRED account. UNL Summer Session Registration begins March 2024. Course number is BIOC998-590.
UNMC students must complete an intercampus enrollment form online at https://www.unl.edu/gradstudies/academics/intercampus to register for this course.
Visa Requirements to travel the US:
Passports and/or Visas are required for international travel. Valid passports are required for all students and faculty wishing to participate in this course. As a result of the Visa Waiver Program, it may not be necessary for all students entering the US. Please check the US Department of State website for US a list of countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program.
Any fees associated with a Visa or Passport application are the responsibility of the applicant. If you require a Visa, you must schedule an in-person interview with the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC.
