Volunteer Code of Conduct
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Nebraska 4-H! We are very excited to have you as a potential volunteer of this amazing 4-H Youth Development Program. The Nebraska Extension 4-H Volunteer application process includes an active approved profile on 4honline, a background screening and completing the Volunteer Orientation Training.
The following steps MUST be completed by ALL Adult Volunteers - Organizational, Club, Project and Shooting Sports Volunteers and ALL Youth Shooting Sports Apprentice Leaders and Ambassador Volunteers
☐ Enroll and be approved as a Volunteer in 4-H Online
- If you have an account in 4-H Online, please use your login information to sign into your account. If you are having difficulties getting logged into your account, please call the office for assistance. DO NOT create a new account.
- Adult Volunteers (Horse and Shooting Sports) and Youth Shooting Sports (Apprentice Leaders and Ambassador Volunteers) need to sign off on consent forms at the time of enrollment.
- Once you have been approved as a volunteer in 4-H Online you will be covered by Nebraska 4-H Insurance during a 4-H Event (meeting, practice, workshop, competition, etc.)
☐ Complete Criminal History Background Check through Sterling Volunteer
- Volunteers (teens and adults) are screened in order to ensure a safe, positive and nurturing environment for all youth involved with Nebraska 4-H programs and provide protection for the child, volunteer, educator, 4-H Council, Extension Board, and Nebraska Extension.
- Youth being screened are required to be 14 years of age and must complete a minor consent form from our screening volunteer, Sterling Volunteers. Contact your local Extension office to obtain this consent.
- There will be a $16 fee plus processing that must be paid online at the time of completing the volunteer screening. ONLY Complete the Sterling Volunteer Background check through 4-H online. Do not go directly to Sterling Volunteer website, the cost will be higher than $16.
- All volunteers are required to complete the volunteer screening again every five years based on the volunteer's anniversary date. When it is time for re-screening, volunteers will be prompted with instructions for completing the online re-screening process.
- Be assured the volunteer screening process is confidential.
- Volunteers enrolling in 4-H Online will automatically be directed to the volunteer screening website when enrolling. Once you have completed the background check DO NOT FORGET TO GO BACK TO 4-H Online to complete your 4-H online enrollment.
- All volunteers re-screening must be completed by March 15, 2025
☐ Complete Volunteer Orientation Training
- The Nebraska 4-H Volunteer Orientation serves as an introduction to the 4-H Youth Development program in Nebraska. As part of the screening process, the orientation covers a variety of foundational and essential topics.
- All new volunteers (adult and youth) serving in direct roles, such as club leader, project leader, or workshop presenter, are required to complete the orientation. Volunteers are also required to complete the orientation as part of the re-screening process every 5 years.
- The training takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.
- Volunteers enrolling in 4-H Online will automatically be directed to the volunteer orientation training. Once you have completed the volunteer orientation training DO NOT FORGET TO GO BACK TO 4-H Online to complete your 4-H online enrollment.
- If you want to complete the volunteer orientation training before enrolling in 4-H online you can do that. Go to https://4h.unl.edu/volunteer-orientation. Upon successful completion, you will receive a confirmation email. Your county Extension office will also be notified of your successful completion.
Volunteer Roles:
Volunteers are able to select from three different volunteer types in 4-H Online. Volunteers will need to select more than one to be able to select a club and project.
- Club Volunteer Type: Two Roles
- Organizational Leader Role: Will be able to select a club but will not be able to select projects. This Role is intended for the primary Club Leaders. A club may have multiple Volunteers listed in this role.
- Club Leader Role: Will be able to select a club but will not be able to select projects.
- Program Volunteer Type:
- County Volunteer Role: Volunteer associated with the County only. Will not be associated with a club or a specific project area.
- Project Volunteer Type:
- Project Leader Role: Will be able to select project area, but will not be able to select a club.
- Shooting Sports Leaders MUST select their discipline from the volunteer project listing in order to sign the required shooting sports consent form.
- Volunteers should add project that begins with “Volunteer: Project Name. These are found near the bottom of the project list.
- Choose as many projects are you are certified in/serve as a volunteer for.
- Project Leader Role: Will be able to select project area, but will not be able to select a club.
Where and How to Enrollment in 4-H
- Enroll/re-enroll each year by April 1 and by using the online 4-H enrollment program
